Verbalizing Our Feelings January 8, 2010
It is important for children at a young age to use their words to express how they are feeling. Children’s vocabularies are growing so quickly. When we encourage children to use that vocabulary, often times it will eliminate the temper-tantrums and increase the communication. For example, when a child screams because someone has a toy that they want, we feel it is important to pause and ask the child to use their words and tell us (and the other child) how they are feeling. Help children form sentences like, ” I am sad because I want to play with that toy too” or “I am upset becuase I never get to play with that toy.” The more parents and teachers encourage children to verbalize their feelings, the sooner they will do it on their own. Remember… practice makes perfect.
